Well I figured I could type up a little Farewell post to the play we just finished.
The play is called Private Lives by Noel Coward. It's a 1920s comedy of Manners, which is set in France (a hotel for Act 1, and Paris for Act 2-3). It's about an ex-couple who reunite at a hotel during their separate honeymoons. When they realize they are still in love they decide to ditch their newlyweds and run off together to Paris. However, it's all going well until their spouses come chasing after them.
It's a pretty funny show that can be done so badly, simply because a lot of the jokes are about spousal abuse. It can be a very unfunny show, but it's supposed to be a comedy.
Well I worked on it all semester doing stage construction: Painting, Building, Doing the usual construction stuff. Then on Sunday I found out I would be light board operator as well. It was EASY! I found out all you have to do is hit a button...that's it. I don't know if we have new light board equipment, but yeah...I expected more work than that.
Anyway, so our first show was Friday. The crowd was DEAD! Nobody laughed at all, and all laughter was stifled. We were going, "What's wrong?!" Several audience members told us later they were afraid to laugh. The next night was better. They laughed the loudest of the three shows, and applauded randomly throughout the show. It was like, "Woah, who took the audience and gave them drugs?" Well third performance was today...at 2. Well Everybody thought it was at 2:30...so we had to push the show back because the audience was slim to none. But today's audience was pretty good. They laughed a little bit, but not as loud as the night before.
We had a Cast/crew party on Friday. I am shocked to tell that I actually went (I was talked into it). As with a typical party of the college variety, there was much drinking and frolicking. Nothing says fun quite like seeing one of the actors being dragged in from outside saying random things. Also, with me not being a driver, and the party being about 20 miles from the school, I was stuck. Someone offered me a ride, but they had been drinking, and I'm not a fan of drinking and driving. So...I was there until 8am on Saturday, Arrived back at the school around 8:45, and immediately went to bed (I am afraid to sleep when there are drunk people in the room). Well I have to say, this has been an eye opening experience for me, for I am not a person who parties a lot. So...I doubt I will be going to the next cast party. I might, but doubtful.
Today after finishing the show, we striked the stage. =D This is fun. This means we took a maul (or as known in the theater, the "Mega-Shit Hammer") and destroyed the set. We left some things that we could reuse, such as backdrops for scenes, doorways, and flats, but things that we probably wouldn't need for a long time, we destroyed. It was lots of fun. =D Except, there were these two tables that we used in the play that, while a headache to keep from falling apart, I LOVED! And we destroyed them. I would have saved them if I had room for them, but alas, I did not.
Well. This ends my bit of talk on Private Lives.
Tomorrow is my break, in which case I will write up a critique on Private Lives I have to turn in on Tuesday.
I say Tomorrow is my break, meaning: Today ends Private Lives, Tuesday begins Resort 76.
Never ask for a theater scholarship. They will own your soul.
